What to Bring When Flying Between Motorcycles
When it comes to packing your motorcycle for a trip, most people have it down already. Yet when it comes to flying economy from one country to another one, a lot has to change. With carry-on bag restrictions, outrageous check-in bag prices, weight limits, and TSA security saying “no” to so much, packing is a whole new game.
From August to October of 2019, I flew from the United States to Romania where I rode 14 countries. I share this list of what I took for camping and riding in case it may help someone else pack for their "across the pond" adventure.
Everything will fit into these two bags:
1 - Drakon 40L Outdoor Equipment waterproof backpack
1 - pull string bag
Daily use:
1 - deodorant
5 - charging cords (5 because they break and because I need 2 kinds)
1 - external battery pack (20,000mah)
3 - wall adapters (Samsung Fast Charger preferred)
1 - pair of ear buds
1 - pack of baby wipes (all natural, no chemical kind)
2 - pairs of sunglasses with bag
1 - bottle of varied over the counter medicine (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, Zyretec, anti-nausea, sleep aids, acid reducers)
1 - tube of lotion
1 - shower bag (Q-tips, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, combs, tweezers, nail clippers, perfume, hydrogen peroxide, floss picks, exfoliating glove)
1 - wallet with cash, drivers license, and debit card
1 - passport
1 - color copy of passport and drivers license
1 - empty water bottle (Smart water bottle is my preferred)
Motorcycle related:
1 - Riding jacket
1 - Riding pants
1 - Thin Pair of gloves
1 - Thick pair of gloves (necessary for mountain riding)
1 - ROK strap (for clothes bag on motorcycle)
1 - Cramp Buster (to aid in long days riding)
Clothes:
1 - Carhartt hoodie
1 - Hat
2 - long sleeve plaid shirts
2 - short sleeve shirts
2 - pairs of shorts
1 - pair of zip off hiking pants
3 - pairs of boot socks
1 - pair of warm wool socks
1 - belt
3 - bandanas
2 - bras
1 - pair of boots
1 - pair of flip flops
1 - bikini top
1 - microfiber towel
1 - Sea to Summit eVent compression sack (all the clothes go into it before packing the motorcycle)
Camping:
1 - ENO Reactor hammock
1 - ENO bug net
1 - 0° Enlightened Equipment Revelation quilt
1 - tarp (currently using a cheap Walmart backpacking one)
1 - set of ENO Helios straps
1 - NeoAir Xrherm pad
4 - cheap Walmart tent stakes (metal stakes not allowed)
1 - homemade extensive first aid kit (eye wash, face mask, gloves, aloe, antibiotic cream, QuikClot, anti-itch cream, various bandaids, gauze, tape, etc)
1 - Traveler’s ground sheet
1 - plastic spoon/fork combo
5 - assorted flashlights with extra batteries (including a headlamp)
12 - disposable hand/foot warmers (Hot Hands/Feet)
1 - pack of Repel bug wipes
1 - bag of various sized Ziplock bags
1 - floating sunglass strap
1 - pair of ear plugs, emergency towel, reflective blanket, emergency poncho
1 - pack of playing cards
Consumables (optional):
1 - bag of beef jerky
5 - granola bars (KIND is my brand)
1 - bag of mixed nuts
12 - bag of fruit chews
2 - bottles of water flavor
3 - packs of gum
6 - packs of peanut butter crackers
40 - business cards
20 - stickers
1 - sharpie
What I bought when I landed:
1 - pocket knife
1 - lighter
1 - homemade toolkit for the motorcycle (mini tape measure, hex keys, wrenches, screw driver/socket multi kit, chain lube, etc) (you can bring it with you but it’s extra weight)
1 - safety vest (required for break downs in Austria)
1 - European first aid kit (required for Austria)
1 - European USB wall adapter
1 - motorcycle helmet (I borrowed one)
Keep in mind, a lot of regular camping gear is not allowed in carry-on baggage on planes, such as flint, knives, pocket saw, metal stakes. If you decide to check a bag, you can bring anything your heart desires. I’ve even had my electrical tape taken at an airport but I’ve never seen it on the “no” list!
The acceptable size of liquids such as shampoo, lotion, body wash is 3.4 ounces or 100ml. You can find fillable travel containers at any pharmacy, Wal-Mart, Target, hypermarket, etc.
I handy tip I have is to bring your own food and an empty water bottle to avoid airport prices. Most food is acceptable besides fresh produce and cheese. You can fill the water bottle at any water fountain for free.
I hope all this helps anyone who may be looking to travel overseas! If you have any comments, questions, or concerns feel free to email me at ziya3@yahoo.com or message me on Facebook. Thanks everyone!
